Nigeria’s drive towards a cleaner and more sustainable maritime sector received renewed momentum as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reaffirmed its commitment to maritime decarbonisation, green shipping and enhanced protection of the marine environment.
Speaking during a strategic meeting Mobeteola stated that both institutions agreed to focus on initiatives aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable maritime sector.
The NIMASA boss also said that the importance of stronger collaboration with the private sector and other key stakeholders in driving Nigeria’s maritime environmental sustainability agenda cannot be overemphasized adding that achieving the country’s environmental goals will require practical, innovative and collaborative approaches capable of addressing climate change, protecting the marine environment and improving the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The proposed initiatives are expected to support Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon maritime sector while contributing to the sustainable growth of the nation’s marine and blue economy.
Similarly, Chief Executive Officer of Natural Eco Capital Limited, Dr. Eugene Itua, presented the Nigerian Green Shipping Excellence Programme (NGSEP) and the Green Maritime Recognition Scheme (GMRS), highlighting their potential to drive maritime decarbonisation, encourage the adoption of cleaner technologies, attract climate investments, and position Nigeria as a regional leader in sustainable shipping.
