APM Terminals Nigeria has commenced drug and alcohol testing for truck drivers accessing its terminal as part of efforts to strengthen safety, promote responsible driving and reduce the risk of road and workplace accidents in port operations.

In a notice to all truck owners, operators and driver, the leadership of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO said that all truck owners and operators are hereby advised to immediately caution their drivers against the consumption of alcohol or the misuse of drugs, particularly before and during their driving duties.

AMATO warned that truck drivers who test positive for drugs or alcohol will be denied entry into APM Terminals, insisting that affected drivers must be replaced before their trucks can proceed with business at the terminal.

In a notice to members, AMATO said the drug and alcohol testing exercise would commence on Wednesday, urging truck owners and operators to caution their drivers against consuming alcohol or misusing drugs before and during driving duties.

Part of the notice reads: “Let us remember that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs endangers the lives of drivers, other road users, and everyone within the port environment. Safety must always come first.”
